Citations for Local SEO – Tuesday Tip Video Clip

Citations (listings of your business name, address, and phone number on other websites) are an incredibly important factor in how your dealership will show up in local search results. Most auto dealers have never heard of them, and most automotive SEO providers don’t do anything with them – so just a little bit of citation work can make a HUGE difference in how you rank.

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT Hey there – thanks for stopping by for another Tuesday Tip Video Clip. This week, we’re talking about citations. If you haven’t heard of them before, citations are mentions of your dealership’s Name, Address, and Phone number on other websites. You may have heard your SEO guy refer to them as NAP information.

Since Google automatically infers local intent on any searches related to car dealers, it’s important to go above and beyond traditional SEO and optimize for local searches. Citations are the most important off-site signal for local ranking success.

Google expects businesses to be listed on certain websites, like Google, Yahoo, Bing, or even Yelp. It’s also extremely important that your business information matches from site to site – if the information is incorrect, that will hurt how well you’ll rank in local searches.

You need to be sure that you’re listed on the important citation sites, and you need to be absolutely sure that your NAP information matches exactly on each site. It’s easy to check your citations with a tool called Moz Local. Go to and click “check my listing score”. Enter your website’s URL, and you’ll get a summary of your current citations.

The first tab you’ll see shows your citation status on an easy to read graph, and the other tabs will help show you incomplete citations, inconsistent citations, and duplicate citations. Each tab includes links to help you go right to the source to make updates or corrections.

Most dealers have no idea what citations are, and many automotive SEO providers don’t specialize in Local SEO – so working on your citations can have a pretty huge effect on how you rank in local searches.

Virtual high five – you just learned something new. As always, if you have any questions or comments, leave them down below. Thanks for stopping by, and we’ll see you again next week.
