Welcome to another Tuesday Tip Video Clip. This week, we’re talking about Google My Business, what used to be called “Google Places.” This is one area that tons of dealers know nothing about, but it’s incredibly important if you want your dealership to rank well in local searches.
Your Google My Business (“Google Places”) listing is what shows up in the map pack – the list of 3 or 7 businesses on the first page of Google with address, phone number, review stars, and a map pin. It’s like a directory listing in the Yellow Pages, but it’s right on Google, and it helps you show up better in local searches.
Claiming your Google My Business (“Google Places”) listing is the #1 most important thing you can do to get your dealership to show up better in local searches. If you haven’t claimed it yet, get in there and do it immediately.
If you’re requesting postcards but they’re not arriving, you can call Google My Business (“Google Places”) support and get help with your verification. Just go to this URL: http://bit.ly/phonesupport, then click the Contact Us link at the top, then click Call Us, then fill out your info, and someone from Google will call you.
Once it’s claimed, you’ll want to follow the tips and progress bar on the editing screen to get your listing to 100%. Google is actually telling you exactly what to do to optimize your Google My Business (“Google Places”) listing.
You’ll need to upload a user image – this shows up in the little circle, and it’s what shows up next to your social posts.
You’ll also need to upload a cover image. If you don’t, people will see the default color swish, and you’re missing a huge branding opportunity.
You’ll also need to upload photos of your dealership. We suggest uploading at least 10 photos, but there’s no limit – so upload as many as you want.
Make sure you enter your dealership name exactly as it is – don’t try to stuff in keywords, that will get you dinged with a penalty.
You’ll want to make sure you’ve got a local phone number listed, and that it’s the same local phone number that’s on the home page of your site. Call tracking or 800 numbers are bad for local SEO, so don’t use them.
Enter your hours of operation – it’s important for people to know when you’re open.
You’ll want to make sure you choose the right categories. Make sure to include service categories if you’ve got a service lane.
You’ll also want to write a great description. In the old Places dashboard, you were limited to 200 characters. Now, with the new dashboard, there’s no limit. You can also format your text and add links in your description. Write something awesome, but make sure you’re not trying to stuff in keywords.
